Today is Pentecost Sunday.

It is the day that the Christian Church celebrates God’s gift of the Holy Spirit. “Pentecost” is a word that means fifty days. For the Jews, the festival marked the fifty days between the Exodus

(the release of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt) to

God’s giving of the law (Ten Commandments) on Mount Sinai.

For the Jews, the Law was God’s greatest gift. It was what distinguished them from all the other nations, helped guide their way in living a holy and prosperous life,

and revealed to them who God is and what God expects.

Similarly, we Christians celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit,

who marks us as God’s children, guides us in our daily lives,

and reveals the truth of God’s word and the salvation of God’s Son Jesus Christ. Pentecost is also known as the “birth of the Church,” because from that day forward the gospel spread and churches multiplied. The traditional color for Pentecost is red,

after the flames described in Acts 2:3.

00:00 / 02:44

Breathe on me, breath of God, fill me with life anew
that I may love what thou dost love and do what thou wouldst do

Breathe on me, breath of God, till I am wholly thine
Till all this earthly part of me glows with thy fire divine

Spirit of the Living God, fall fresh on me
Spirit of the Living God, fall fresh on me
Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me
Spirit of the Living God, fall fresh on me

"God the Spirit"  (Matt Boswell)

Holy fount of inspiration by whose gift the great of old
spoke the word of revelation, marvelous and manifold

Chorus

God the Spirit we adore thee, in the Triune Godhead, One
one in love and power and glory with the Father and the Son

Author of the new creation, giver of the second birth
may thy ceaseless renovation cleanse our souls from stains of earth
(chorus)

When we wander Lord, direct us, keep us in the Master’s way
Let they strong swift sword protect us warring in the evil day

Shall the church now faint or fear when the Comforter is near? (chorus)

Time of Confession
Call to Confession   Acts 2:21

“Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Prayers of Confession

Almighty and Loving God,
you poured out your Spirit upon gathered disciples from every nation,
anointing them as priests of the Good News.
Therefore, all honor, glory, and praise belong to you from every tongue.
But we have been a divided people.
We do not recognize and value people as your beloved children.
We build barriers between those around us.
Have mercy on us; break the barriers of hatred,

and tear down the towers of sin.
Remind us that you have called us to unity through one Lord,

one faith, and one baptism.
Holy Spirit, bind us together as your family.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
Amen.

Words of Assurance  (Ezekiel 36:24-28)

“‘For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.  And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God."

 Sharing Christ's Peace

Because God has given us his peace, we are invited to share the peace of Christ with others. Whether digitally through a text message or by turning to someone next to you, share the peace of Christ now with the words: "The peace of Christ be with you!" If you are on the receiving end of these words, you are invited to reply, "And also with you."

The Peace of Christ be with you.

          And also with you!

Offering

A life of generosity, for all who know Christ, means the opportunity to draw closer to God, now and in eternity. It means joy, a fulfilled heart, and the potential to store up treasures in heaven. Once you take hold of it, once you begin to feel the change generosity brings into your life, you will feel a strong calling to share the message with others.
