This Christmas we invite you to:
Worship Fully- because Christmas begins and ends with Jesus!
Spend Less- and free your resources for things that truly matter.
Give More- of your presence: your hands, your words, your time, your heart!
Love All- the poor, the forgotten, the marginalized, the sick, in ways that make a difference.
Long ago Christmas changed the world and we believe that can happen again.
For many of us, Christmas is not the happiest time of the year. We lament at seeing the holiday push start earlier and earlier each year. The holidays brings anxiety over busy schedules, and spending money we don’t have for things no one really needs. It’s full of expectations that aren’t met, pressure to find the right gifts, finding the right decorations, and the season not feeling spiritual enough.
Many of us reach the end of each Advent season with an aching emptiness. Something deep inside tells us we missed it--whatever it is our soul longs for this time of year.
If Christmas is about gifts, decorations, parties, spending and buying, then these feelings make sense.
Nothing will ever be enough and there will always be disappointment. Thankfully, that’s not what Christmas is about.
To help you and yours participate in our Advent Conspiracy, we will be offering these key ministries this season:
On Wednesday, December 2nd from 5:00-8:30pm at Fifth, we will be hosting a Women at Risk
Boutique where you can purchase different handmade items. These purses, jewelry and more are
made by women who have been rescued through WAR. Come and get presents with a purpose!
For more information, please contact Julie Wildschut. You can also RSVP on the WAR Boutique
Facebook Event Page.
Mexico Water Project: This year there are two options: Clean Water or Children's Bible story books. You can purchase clean water in somebody's honor as a Christmas gift. The suggested amount is $50, but any amount will purchase a card that says," A gift was given on your behalf toward a water purification system to give a family of ten water for life." Fifth's water team will use these gifts to bless families and villages in Mexico with water purification systems when they travel there in February. Clean water will be available to purchase by the Christmas tree in the lobby from November 22nd – December 13th. What a life-changing gift!
Outreach to children in the villages is growing. You can help us bring the gospel to children by donating Spanish Children's Bibles or Bible story books. This is an opportunity to give the gift of Jesus this advent season.
Angel Tree - You can purchase gifts for families in the Grand Rapids area who would otherwise
go without. Fifth Church is once again partnering with Clancy Street Ministries to provide ten
families with food baskets, clothing and toys for Christmas. Choose an angel off the tree in the
lobby which will list the Christmas wish of a child. Angels will be available on Sunday,
November 22nd, Thanksgiving day, and Sunday November 29th. Please return your gift(s) to
church on or before Sunday, December 13th. What a wonderful way to show Christ's love to
those in the Grand Rapids area!
RCA Gift Catalog - Fifth's Global Mission Team invites you to consider a project for your
small group, youth group or family that can help break the cycle of poverty around the world
while sharing Christ's love. Gift of Hope is an RCA resource that lets you choose gifts of
various amounts to send to areas of need around the world. Examples include an animal,
groceries, water carriers or medical help. Catalogs are currently available by the Global Mission
Screen in the lobby across from the office and will be available throughout the duration of the
Advent Conspiracy on a table in the lobby with the other giving opportunities.
In addition to giving to families around the world, our workers in Eastern Europe will be returning soon with an expanded family. They have identified three needs and are grateful for any support:
1. An au pair (nanny) to live with them the next 1-2 years to help with 4 small
2. Outreach Center: their local fellowship has raised about half of the funds needed
to purchase a place to be used for discipleship/education and looking for matching
funds. The time is right as they have obtained legal status.
3. Ministry Vehicle: As 90% of their driving is ministry related, there is a great
need for a 7 seat van that would allow transportation of their family as well as
friends to meetings and studies.
Complete details outlined at the table in the lobby including how to direct any gifts.
Hats, Mittens and Scarfs - Use your talent of knitting and crocheting to make somebody's
winter a bit warmer. Your donations of hats, mittens and scarves can be brought to the Christmas
tree in the church lobby through January 3rd. They will be given to our friends at Mulick Park
